JOSE FERREIRA WORKING ON A COPIER. © José Ferreira W.
They said :
" With the help of a photocopyer, used as some sort of camera, José Ferreira W. captures his own bodily movements then exploits the machine's image processing functions to obtain the image we are seeing. The musician's hands –captured in motion– remain the only recognizable items in the image while the instrument has exploded in myriads of multicolored pixels.

The electronic processing of the image here echoes the electronic processing of sound. The dematerialization of the instrument, as put into image by the artist, illustrates what was to become a major issue for composers in the second half of  the XXst century.

This Musicians' series is considered the most complete and accomplished goup of works from José Ferreira W's xerographic period.

• The gestures the artist performs before the copier here meet a true need : bring to the observer a recognizable image of musicians' hands in action, despite the visual absence of their instruments.

• To fulfill this purpose, not only has the artist exploited most of the color copier's graphic funct-ions but he has also taken advantage of fingerprints and unintentional wiping traces on the plateglass as well as parasite stripes left by damaged inkrolls in order to obtain strings, textures and depth effects.

• Executed in a variety of multiples, each artwork never-theless remains unique, as every new print is done under a different set of adjustments. Series extend from 5 to 17 copies all different from one another (for ex.: see the Double bass player series, opposite left, bottom line )
